Before you look at my paintings let me explain that I have been playing music professionally since 1958. To me there are basically two types of music:
Music played from written music and therefore played 'as written'
Jazz, which is improvised music. The musician 'creates' the music as the instrument is being played.
I have put the word create in quotes, because when I play jazz I feel less the creator and much more the tool (instrument) of a creative process. The process starts outside of me, flows through me and ends outside of me, first at the piano and from there at the audience. Whenever I try to start the creative process with ME, things don't go so well. The music is much better, much more spontaneous, much more inspired if I remove my ego from the creative process, from the flow of things. After all, inspiration means 'Spirit' coming 'in'.
I have played both kinds of music and feel that they, with respect to painting, can be compared to Realism and Abstract Expressionism.
Of great importance to me is that, when I write songs, the lyrics come at the same time. In other words

There is a MESSAGE attached to my music!

At the end of my array of paintings you will see some realistic ones. Portraits, a dog, dancers. So much for realism.

My abstracts are the result of the flow of nature streaming through me, using me as a tool, and ending up on the canvas. As such I don't question the result. Many times 'things' appear on my canvases that I never intended to paint. They just appear as if someone else placed them there. I stopped questioning that also. For a while, after having finished a painting, I would asked myself: Would someone like to have this hanging in their living room? But if I were to start painting from that perspective, I would be creating what I call BABart (Bread and Butter art). Fortunately I don't depend on my art income to make a living. Which gives me the freedom to paint the way I'm guided to paint and the way I want to paint. Just as in my music there are lyrics that come with some of the songs, I find that many times there are 'messages' attached to my paintings. They are non-verbal, naturally, and more of a symbolic nature. But they are there, loud and clear. Enjoy!
